Ice Blocks Guide

Minecraft Ice Guide: Types, Recipes, Uses and Differences

Minecraft has four ice types in released versions — ice, packed ice, blue ice and frosted ice — and the differences come down to melting, collection and speed: only plain ice melts, only frosted ice can't be collected, and only blue ice makes boats faster (72.73 vs 40 blocks/s reference top speed). Two more are on the way in the Fourth Drop 2026: brittle ice and the packed ice bricks set, currently in test builds only. This page is the quick-reference overview; each block has a full page linked below.

Which ice for which job

The three most common problems, solved elsewhere

1. "Ice broke and dropped nothing" → Why Is Ice Not Dropping in Minecraft? (Silk Touch, water-on-break rules, frosted ice). 2. "My ice build melted" → Which Ice Doesn't Melt in Minecraft? (light levels, torches, the Nether). 3. "I saw ice stairs in a video" → Minecraft Ice Stairs (they're new, test-only packed ice brick stairs).

FAQ

How many types of ice are in Minecraft?

Four in released versions (ice, packed ice, blue ice, frosted ice). The Fourth Drop 2026 adds brittle ice and the packed ice bricks set, taking the family to six types (ten blocks counting brick variants) once it ships.

What's the difference between packed ice and blue ice?

Blue ice is more slippery (0.989 vs 0.98) and the only ice that raises boat speed — 72.73 vs 40 blocks/s reference — but it costs 9 packed ice per block (wiki: Blue Ice).

Do all ice types need Silk Touch?

All collectible ones: ice, packed ice and blue ice. Frosted ice drops nothing even with Silk Touch; the bricks coming in Drop 4 are the exception — they always drop.

Is ice renewable?

Yes — all of it. Water freezes in snowy biomes (ice), and packed/blue ice craft upward from it (wiki: Packed Ice). ---
