Packed Ice in Minecraft: How to Get It & What It's Used For

Packed ice is ice that never melts — and it only drops when mined with a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, breaking it drops nothing, and unlike regular ice it never turns into water (wiki: Packed Ice). It's slippery like ice, boats treat it the same (a reference top speed of 40 m/s), and it's the crafting ingredient for blue ice and the new packed ice bricks set. You can find it in ice spikes biomes, frozen peaks, frozen-ocean icebergs — or craft it from 9 ice, or buy it from a wandering trader for 1 emerald.

Version note: This page covers packed ice in current released versions of Java and Bedrock Edition. Packed ice gains new generation (ice caves) and interactions in the upcoming Fourth Drop 2026 — marked inline. Last checked: October 21, 2026.

How to get packed ice

There are four routes. For most players the first one is the whole answer; the rest are backups.

1. Mine it with Silk Touch

Bring any tool enchanted with Silk Touch — the tool type doesn't matter for the drop, a pickaxe just mines fastest (wiki: Packed Ice). Where packed ice generates:

LocationNotes
Ice spikes biomeThe classic source — spikes of packed ice across a snowy plains variant
Frozen peaksMountain-top generation
Frozen ocean icebergsPacked ice forms the icebergs; blue ice lines their undersides
Snowy plains villagesPiles of it, plus some houses
Ancient citiesIncludes the ice box chest loot: 2–6 packed ice per chest, ~80.5% of chests (wiki)
Trial chambersAround stray spawners
Igloo windowsBedrock Edition only
Ice caves (Fourth Drop 2026 — not yet released)Packed ice throughout the new biome, including giant packed-ice columns (wiki: Fourth Drop 2026)

2. Craft it from ice

9 ice in a 3×3 square → 1 packed ice. The ice itself needs Silk Touch, so this route only makes sense if you have an ice farm in a snowy biome (wiki: Packed Ice). The craft is one-way — packed ice cannot be turned back into ice.

3. Buy from a wandering trader

Wandering traders occasionally sell 1 packed ice for 1 emerald (wiki). In Bedrock Edition there's also a quirk: a wandering trader holding out packed ice has a 25% chance (plus 1% per Looting level) to drop one when killed while you hold an emerald.

4. If you just want the bricks — remember the prerequisite

Every packed ice brick starts as packed ice: the 2×2 bricks recipe, the stonecutter conversions — all of it consumes packed ice. The full chain is in How to Get Packed Ice Bricks.

FAQ

Why won't packed ice drop when I mine it?

Your tool lacks Silk Touch. No enchantment other than Silk Touch collects packed ice — Fortune does nothing here. Full checklist: Why Is Ice Not Dropping?

Does packed ice melt near torches or lava?

No. It never melts, at any light level (wiki: Packed Ice). That's the main reason builders pick it over regular ice.

Is packed ice faster than blue ice for boats?

No — it's the opposite. Both ice and packed ice sit at the wiki's 40 m/s reference top speed; blue ice reaches 72.73 m/s in the same reference figures. Comparison with conditions: Best Ice for Boat Roads.

Can packed ice be crafted back into ice?

No. Packed ice is not a storage block; the 9-ice recipe is one-way (wiki: Packed Ice). ---
