How We Verify: Our Minecraft Ice Testing & Fact-Checking Method
Every claim on this site is desk-checked against three evidence tiers — Mojang's official changelogs, Mojang's own game data files, and minecraft.wiki — with the check date on each page. What we have not done yet is run timed in-game benchmarks ourselves, so boat speeds and a few new-block behaviours are labelled as reference figures, not measurements. This page lists exactly what's verified, how, and what we plan to test next.
The evidence tiers we use
1. Official changelogs (feedback.minecraft.net, minecraft.net) — what shipped, in which build, with Mojang's own wording ("Does not melt", "Best tool is Pickaxe"). Primary source for every version claim. 2. Mojang's game data files — we download the official snapshot server.jar and client.jar from Mojang's own CDN, verify the SHA-1 hash against Mojang's manifest, and read the packaged data: crafting recipes (inputs, layout, output counts), loot tables (whether a block needs Silk Touch), block/item tags and the built-in language files. This is how the packed ice brick recipes on this site are confirmed to the exact number, and it's the strongest evidence tier for anything data-driven. 3. minecraft.wiki — for mechanics that aren't in data files (friction values are compiled into game code, melting thresholds, generation rules). Where the wiki is our only source, pages say so.
Community videos and posts are used as leads, never as final evidence.
Verified so far (highlights)
- Packed ice bricks recipes — triple-sourced: the official changelogs, the snapshot's own recipe files, and the wiki. Includes the chiseled variant's 2-slab crafting recipe, which the wiki's main bricks page omitted for a while.
- Drop rules — the bricks' loot table has no Silk Touch condition (they always drop); packed ice's does. Confirmed in the snapshot data and cross-checked by running the dedicated server headless on October 21, 2026:
/lootproduced the brick from its own loot table with no tool, and produced nothing for packed ice without Silk Touch. - Official display names — read directly from the snapshot's built-in English language file (e.g. "Packed Ice Brick Stairs", "Chiseled Packed Ice"), and the Chinese language file, where the classic four ice blocks have official names (冰/浮冰/蓝冰/霜冰) but the bricks family has none yet — which is why our Chinese-language materials mark 浮冰砖 as a tentative translation.
- Version availability — each page's status line is checked against Mojang's version manifest and the official changelogs (as of October 22, 2026: packed ice bricks live in Java 26.4 Snapshot 5+ and Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21+, nowhere else).
What we haven't tested yet
| Test | Status | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Boat top speeds on ice / packed ice / blue ice, both editions | Partially covered: the wiki documents Java at 40 and 72.7 blocks/s with Bedrock scaled to match, and the best community measurement (a speedometer-equipped 2,000-block Bedrock run, r/MCPE) landed at ≈72.3 blocks/s on blue ice and ≈40 on ice/packed ice. Our own timed runs are still pending (P0). | Best Ice for Boat Roads, Is Blue Ice Worth It? |
| Boats on packed ice bricks | Planned — checked October 22, 2026: no test exists anywhere yet; the wiki lists default friction only | Packed Ice Bricks |
Frosted ice commands (/setblock on Java, /give on Bedrock) | Planned — wiki-documented only | Frosted Ice |
| Ice breaking into water (support/Nether rules) | Planned re-verification | Ice, Why Is Ice Not Dropping? |
How the boat tests will run (our standard)
Each surface gets at least 5 timed runs on a marked straight course, logged with the full version number, dimension, boat type, start method (standing vs pre-accelerated) and anomalies. We publish the average and call out outliers rather than deleting them. A bricks course is always compared against a packed-ice control on the same day and version. The blank record sheet we use is part of our internal notes; results will be published on the pages above with their check dates.
