Ice Blocks Guide

Minecraft Ice Stairs: What They Are & How to Make Them

Vanilla Minecraft has no block actually named "Ice Stairs" — the ice stairs you've seen in videos are almost certainly the new Packed Ice Brick Stairs, added on October 20, 2026 in Java 26.4 Snapshot 5 and Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21, and they are not in any released version of the game yet. That's why your game doesn't have them: they ship with the Fourth Drop 2026 in Q4 2026. If you're on a released version, older videos were using mods, add-ons or data packs. Here's the confirmed name, the exact recipe, which versions have it, and how to fix it when the recipe won't work.

Version status (checked October 21, 2026): Packed Ice Brick Stairs exist only in Java 26.4 Snapshot 5+ and Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21+ (official Bedrock changelog, official Java changelog). Full release: Java 26.4 / Bedrock 26.70, Q4 2026. No experimental toggle is needed — the set is listed under "Drop 4 of 2026 Features" in the Bedrock changelog.

What you're seeing in videos — and why you can't assume

A stair-shaped block in a video could be several things, and video compression makes whitish blocks hard to tell apart:

So: check the video's date and description first. If it's from before October 20, 2026 and claims vanilla, it's a mod or a different block. If it's from after, it's probably Packed Ice Brick Stairs from the test builds.

The confirmed name and recipe

The block's official name is Packed Ice Brick Stairs. Confirmed facts, cross-checked between the wiki recipe tables and the official Java snapshot's data files (the server jar contains packed_ice_brick_stairs.json with exactly this recipe):

StepRecipeOutput
1. Packed ice bricks4 packed ice in a 2×2 square (crafting table or inventory grid)4 packed ice bricks
2. Packed Ice Brick Stairs6 packed ice bricks in the stair layout (4 in the left column, 2 top-right)4 stairs
ShortcutStonecutter: 1 packed ice brick → 1 stair1 stair each

(wiki: Packed Ice Bricks; the 2×2 and 6→4 numbers are also in the official 26.4-snapshot-5 data files.)

Counting the full chain: one batch of stairs costs 6 bricks, and since the 2×2 recipe turns packed ice into bricks one-for-one, that's 6 packed ice per 4 stairs (crafting route). The stonecutter route costs the same 6 packed ice → 6 bricks but yields 6 stairs, one per brick — strictly cheaper per stair for small batches.

Stair layout (6 bricks → 4 stairs): Stonecutter:
X . . 1 brick ──→ 1 stair
X X .

The other variants while you're there: slab = 3 bricks → 6, wall = 6 bricks → 6, and Chiseled Packed Ice = 2 brick slabs stacked → 1 (also stonecutter-cuttable). One naming note: the Bedrock changelog prose uses the British spelling "chiselled", but the block name on both editions is Chiseled Packed Ice (official Bedrock changelog).

Platforms for the Bedrock test builds: Preview runs on Windows, iOS/iPadOS, Xbox and PlayStation; Android and ChromeOS get it as the Beta (official Bedrock changelog).

Step by step (survival, on a supported test build)

1. Get packed ice. Mine ice spikes / frozen peaks / icebergs with any Silk Touch tool, or craft 9 ice → 1 packed ice, or buy from a wandering trader (1 emerald). Details: Packed Ice. 2. Craft bricks. 4 packed ice in a 2×2 square → 4 bricks. 3. Craft stairs. 6 bricks in the stair layout → 4 stairs. Or put bricks in a stonecutter, 1 brick → 1 stair. 4. Place them. They don't slide, never melt, and drop themselves when broken (pickaxe fastest, hands work) — so stairs by a torch-lit door are safe.

If the recipe doesn't work — checklist

1. Version first: open your version number. Anything below Java 26.4-snapshot-5 or Bedrock 26.70.21 (or not in a Preview/Beta program) can't have this recipe — it's not in released versions yet. 2. Java launcher: enable snapshots in the Installations tab; the version shows as "26.4-snapshot-5" in the launcher. 3. Bedrock: Preview/Beta must be joined via the platform's insider program (Xbox/PS/Windows/iOS Preview, Android Beta); servers and realms may still run older versions. 4. Server mismatch: a server running a different version won't craft version-exclusive blocks — check /version or the server's MOTD. 5. Wrong ingredient: stairs need packed ice bricks (the crafted block), not packed ice. Six packed ice in the stair layout crafts nothing. 6. Spelling in commands: /give @s packed_ice_brick_stairs — singular "stair" in the ID, per the Java snapshot's block registration. 7. Still stuck on a video's recipe? The video may be a mod, an add-on, or a resource-pack reskin. Ask for their version number and mod list.

FAQ

Why can't I find ice stairs in creative mode?

Your version doesn't have them. They exist only in the October 20, 2026 test builds and later; search your creative inventory in Java 26.4-snapshot-5+ or Bedrock Preview 26.70.21+.

Are there blue ice stairs too?

No — the Fourth Drop 2026 adds packed ice brick variants only. There are no ice, blue ice or frosted ice stairs in vanilla.

Will my packed ice brick stairs melt near torches?

No. The whole bricks set inherits the no-melt, no-water behaviour of packed ice (wiki: Packed Ice Bricks).

Can I make the stairs in a released version with a data pack?

Technically yes on Java — a data pack can define the recipe and a resource pack the model — but that's modded content, not the vanilla block, and it won't match the official textures. ---
