Frosted Ice in Minecraft: Frost Walker, Melting & Commands
Frosted ice is the temporary, crackling ice that Frost Walker boots create when you walk near water — and it cannot be collected, not even with Silk Touch. Break it and it produces water just like regular ice; mine it with Silk Touch and it still drops nothing (wiki: Frosted Ice). It's slippery like ice, but it's on a timer: exposed to enough light it cracks through four stages and melts back into water. This page keeps four things separate that players often mix up: how it forms, why you can't collect it, how long it lasts, and the one command route that does work.
Version note: This page covers frosted ice in current released versions. Minecraft Beta & Preview 26.70.21 (October 20, 2026) changed how Frost Walker behaves — freezing is now circular and only happens while the wearer is on the ground (official Bedrock changelog). That change ships with the Fourth Drop 2026. Last checked: October 21, 2026.
Quick facts
| Property | Frosted ice |
|---|---|
| How it forms | Frost Walker-enchanted boots (player or mob) walking near water; Frost Walker II covers a larger area (wiki) |
| Can you mine it? | No — Silk Touch drops nothing; any other break produces water |
| Preferred tool | None — it breaks at the same speed with any tool (wiki) |
| Melts? | Yes — cracks through 4 stages, then becomes water (light-dependent; see below) |
| Slippery? | Yes, like regular ice |
| Item form | Bedrock only — obtainable with /give. Java: no item; use /setblock or /fill |
| Found naturally | Nowhere — it only exists where Frost Walker creates it (or commands place it) |

How frosted ice forms
Wear any boots with the Frost Walker enchantment and walk close to water: the water blocks under and around you freeze into frosted ice as you move (wiki: Frosted Ice, wiki: Frost Walker). Frost Walker I freezes water within a radius of about 3 blocks of where you step; Frost Walker II reaches about 4 blocks. Mobs wearing Frost Walker boots do it too, and armor stands pushed near water while equipped can generate it as well. One Java/Bedrock quirk: the freeze shape has historically been circular in Java and square in Bedrock (wiki: Frost Walker).
In the 26.70.21 test builds, Mojang aligned Frost Walker with its intended behaviour: water now freezes in a circular area around the wearer, and only while the wearer is on the ground — which also stops frosted ice forming under you mid-dive (official Bedrock changelog). Until that ships in a full release, live versions keep the older behaviour.
Why you can't collect frosted ice (even with Silk Touch)
This is the part that trips players up: Silk Touch works on every other ice block — but not this one. The wiki is explicit: breaking frosted ice with Silk Touch drops nothing; breaking it any other way produces water like normal ice (wiki: Frosted Ice). There is no pickaxe, enchantment or tool tier that turns frosted ice into an item in survival mode. If a video shows someone picking it up, they're using commands (Bedrock's /give) or an add-on.
How long it lasts, and when it melts
Frosted ice doesn't melt on a fixed timer — it cracks in four visible stages and then turns back into water, driven by random ticks, its age state, light and its neighbours (wiki: Frosted Ice):
- Each block ticks every 1–2 seconds and can advance one crack stage.
- Stages advance only if the block's internal light level is higher than 11 minus its current age — so brighter spots crack faster.
- Cracks also advance when fewer than 4 frosted ice blocks surround the block (thin trails decay faster than a frozen lake).
- At age 4 the block becomes water, and very isolated neighbours can cascade.
- In the dark — underground, at night, in the End — it effectively never melts on its own; it only breaks when you break it or too few neighbours remain.
- Since Java 1.21, melting speed is fully governed by the
randomTickSpeedgame rule: set to 0, frosted ice never melts (wiki).
Practical takeaway: a frosted-ice bridge works at night and underground, but don't rely on it in daylight over open water.
Getting it with commands (Java vs Bedrock)
This is where the editions genuinely differ:
| Method | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
/give @s frosted_ice | No — frosted ice has no item form | Yes — returns a placeable item |
/setblock ~ ~ ~ frosted_ice | Yes | Yes |
/fill | Yes | Yes |
| Survival collection | Impossible | Impossible |
So on Java, use /setblock (or /fill) to place it; on Bedrock you can hold it as an item (wiki: Frosted Ice). Cheats must be enabled in both editions. We haven't run these commands on a live version ourselves yet — the table reflects the wiki's current documentation, and our test plan includes verifying both commands.
Is frosted ice good for anything?
- Shortcuts across water — the intended use: sprint across a lake without swimming, at night or in caves without it melting out from under you.
- Slippery floors where you want the ice look to disappear later (it slides entities like normal ice until it melts).
- For anything permanent, you want packed ice or blue ice instead — see Which Ice Doesn't Melt in Minecraft?.
Don't confuse it with brittle ice from the Fourth Drop 2026 — that's a separate block that breaks underfoot after ~3.6 seconds, never melts, and drops itself with Silk Touch. Comparison: All Ice Blocks Compared.
FAQ
Can you get frosted ice with Silk Touch?
No. Silk Touch drops nothing on frosted ice — it's the one ice block the enchantment can't collect (wiki: Frosted Ice).
Why did my frosted ice melt instantly?
Bright light plus few neighbouring frosted ice blocks makes stages advance quickly. Darkness and company keep it stable; randomTickSpeed 0 freezes it permanently (Java 1.21+).
Is Frost Walker II worth it?
It freezes a wider path, which matters for crossing rivers diagonally or letting multiple players walk abreast. The enchantment itself doesn't change melting speed.
Does Frost Walker work on lava?
No — Frost Walker freezes water. (It does not create a safe path over lava.) ---
