Minecraft Fourth Drop 2026: Every New Ice Block and Ice Change Explained
The Fourth Drop of 2026 is Minecraft's ice-themed update. In one line: it adds ice caves with icicles and ice crystals, five new block types including brittle ice and the packed ice bricks set, a new frostbite mob that throws ice balls and inflicts the Freezing effect, plus updated jukeboxes. It releases as Java Edition 26.4 and Bedrock Edition 26.70 in Q4 2026, and you can play it early right now in Previews and snapshots.
New blocks: the complete list
| Block | What it does | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Packed Ice Bricks | Decorative brick variant of packed ice. Not slippery, never melts, drops without Silk Touch. | Craft 2×2 packed ice (full recipe) |
| Packed Ice Brick Slab / Stairs / Wall | The usual building variants of the bricks. | Crafting table or stonecutter |
| Chiseled Packed Ice | Chiseled variant with an arrow pattern instead of a face. | Crafting table or stonecutter |
| Brittle Ice | Cracks and shatters when stood on for 3.6 seconds. Does not melt, leaves no water. | Silk Touch, or find it covering crevasse cracks in ice caves |
| Ice Crystal | Ground crystal that emits light level 4; breaks if its support block is removed. | Generates on the floor of ice caves |
| Icicle | Spike block: ceiling stalactites and ground stalagmites. Falls and deals height-based damage; grows longer when packed ice is above. | Generates in ice caves; breaks at light level 5+ or in the Nether; tridents break spikes |

Packed ice bricks: the decorative set everyone is searching for
Packed ice bricks are the marquee addition of Preview 26.70.21 and Java Snapshot 26.4-5. They finally give builders an ice block you can actually walk on: unlike packed ice, they use the default block friction, so nothing slides on them. They never melt near light sources, never leave water behind when broken, and — unlike every other ice block — they always drop themselves, no Silk Touch required. The full set is slab, stairs, wall and chiseled packed ice, and all four variants can also be cut with a stonecutter.
The bricks have a three-dimensional texture pattern similar to tuff bricks, rather than the flat look of most brick blocks. We cover the exact crafting chain in How to Get Packed Ice Bricks in Minecraft.
Brittle ice: the trap floor of the ice caves
Brittle ice arrived one Preview earlier (26.70.20) and covers the crevasses inside ice caves. Stand on it and it cracks through four stages — one stage every 1.2 seconds — and shatters after 3.6 seconds of standing, dropping you into whatever is below. Getting off pauses the cracking; it does not reset it. Frostbites are the exception: they can stand on brittle ice without cracking it, and polar bears no longer spawn on it (a 26.70.21 fix).
Three details matter for builders and trap-makers: brittle ice does not melt, breaking it leaves no water block behind, and it can only be collected with Silk Touch. You can also generate it: any water block that touches blue ice horizontally turns into brittle ice — a renewable brittle-ice generator.
Ice caves: a whole new biome under the snow
Ice caves generate underneath frozen, cold and semi-cold surface biomes — and very rarely on the surface. Inside you'll find calcite, packed ice, snow patches, icicles and ice crystals, plus giant speleothem columns made of packed ice. Crevasses — narrow cracks covered in brittle ice with water underneath — cut through the biome, and since 26.70.21 you can fall through broken crevasse ice directly into the cave below. Glow lichen never generates here; strays and frostbites do.
Two interactions to remember: icicles grow longer when packed ice sits above them, and icicle columns break apart at light level 5 or higher (or anywhere in the Nether).
Frostbites, ice balls and the Freezing effect
The frostbite is a snowy-biome zombie variant. Zombies that stand in powder snow for 30 seconds convert into frostbites; frostbites submerged for 30 seconds convert back. They burn in sunlight, are immune to Freezing, don't sink in powder snow, and don't crack brittle ice. Most attack in melee and inflict the Freezing effect; some spawn holding ice balls and throw them as a ranged attack. They drop rotten flesh and ice balls either way.
Ice balls deal damage that scales with projectile speed — the formula is 1.395 × speed in blocks per tick, rounded up — and Preview 26.70.21 raised their base damage to 2. They decelerate sharply, so distant targets take less damage, and they can be brewed into Potions of Freezing. The Freezing effect works like powder snow: over 7 seconds it slows you to half speed, then deals damage every 2 seconds. Any single piece of leather armor nullifies it, as does standing in fire or lava. Blazes, magma cubes and striders take five times the damage.
Jukeboxes, playlists and the Music Features Add-On
Place a chest (or trapped/copper chest) directly above a jukebox and it turns into a playlist player: discs are taken in slot order, looped, and swapped automatically when each finishes, with a "Playing next" tooltip. The jukebox texture itself changed too. Preview 26.70.21 additionally ships the built-in Music Features Add-On: a craftable disc press (blank disc + optional dye + a menu-screen track from C418 or fingerspit = a track disc), and a 17-color pocket jukebox that holds up to 20 track discs and plays them as a playlist from your inventory.
Ice got its own sounds
Packing more audio life into the frozen biomes, ice, packed ice, blue ice and frosted ice each got unique block sounds instead of sharing glass, and regular ice blocks now emit ambient sounds when surrounded by at least 8 ice blocks with air above and water below.
Preview 26.70.21 changelog: the ice-relevant changes
- Packed ice bricks block set added (2×2 packed ice recipe, four variants, stonecutter support)
- Ice ball base damage increased to 2; damage decreases as the ball loses velocity; wither skeletons can now pick up ice balls
- Frostbites hold shields like zombies; no longer spawn naturally underground outside ice caves
- Frost Walker now freezes water in a circle (no directional bias) and only while the wearer is on the ground
- Players can fall into ice caves when crevasse brittle ice breaks; crevasse density made more consistent
- Cold-variant animals spawn from spawn eggs in ice caves
- Guardian damage 5 → 6, elder guardian 5 → 8 (parity with Java); evoker fang damage now scales with difficulty
Which ice is which?
Between ice, packed ice, blue ice, frosted ice, brittle ice and the new bricks, Minecraft now has six ice blocks with genuinely different behavior — slipperiness, melting, Silk Touch requirements and boat speeds. We put the full comparison, with every number verified against the wiki and changelogs, in All Ice Blocks in Minecraft Compared.
FAQ
What is the Fourth Drop 2026 in Minecraft?
It's the ice-themed game drop releasing in Q4 2026 as Java Edition 26.4 and Bedrock Edition 26.70. It adds ice caves, brittle ice, the packed ice bricks set, icicles, ice crystals, frostbites, ice balls, the Freezing effect and updated jukeboxes. It was announced at Minecraft LIVE in September 2026.
When does the ice update fully release?
Q4 2026 is the only official timing; no exact date yet. Experimental versions ship weekly in Bedrock Preview/Beta and Java snapshots until then.
What did Preview 26.70.21 add?
The packed ice bricks set, the Music Features Add-On (disc press, blank discs, pocket jukebox), ice ball base damage 2, and a long list of parity fixes. See the changelog section above.
Are packed ice bricks slippery?
No — they use default friction. They also never melt and never leave water when broken.
How do I play these features early?
Bedrock: join the Preview program (Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Xbox, PlayStation) or Beta on Android/ChromeOS, and install 26.70.21 or newer. Java: enable snapshots in the launcher and install 26.4 Snapshot 5 or newer.
