Ice Blocks Guide

Minecraft Ice Blocks: Which One Do You Need?

Three ice blocks are collectible in Minecraft's released versions — ice, packed ice and blue ice — and which one you need depends on a single question: does anything near it produce light? Ice melts near block light above 11 and leaks water when broken; packed ice and blue ice do neither. Blue ice is also the only one that makes boats faster. Pick your situation below; every card links to a full block page with sources.

The block finder

"I need a slippery surface near torches, lava or my base lighting." → Packed ice. It never melts at any light level and never turns into water. Craft it from 9 ice or mine it with Silk Touch in ice spikes biomes and frozen peaks.

"I want my boat road to be as fast as possible." → Blue ice — the wiki's reference top speed is 72.73 blocks/s versus 40 on the other ice (wiki: Boat). It costs 9 packed ice per block, so budget builders use packed ice instead: same handling, lower speed.

"I want the classic see-through ice look, or a dark-room slide." → Ice. It's the only transparent ice and the only one that melts — keep light sources away, or enjoy that it turns back into water when you break it.

"I want frosty footprints over water." → That's not a block you collect — it's frosted ice, created by Frost Walker boots. It can't be picked up even with Silk Touch, and it melts back into water.

All three stack to 64, and none of the crafts reverse — packed and blue ice are compression blocks, not storage (wiki: Ice).

The special case

Frosted ice exists in released versions but is not really "collectible": it forms only under Frost Walker boots, drops nothing even with Silk Touch, and Bedrock's /give is the only way to hold it as an item.

What about the new ice blocks?

The Fourth Drop 2026 (Q4 2026, currently in Java 26.4 Snapshot 5 and Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21) adds brittle ice and the packed ice bricks set. They're real and documented, but not in any released version yet, so they don't appear in the finder above — see All Ice Blocks Compared and the packed ice bricks page.
